Once you enter ‘1947 London’ cosily nestled in the heart of the UK’s capital, you’re greeted with a spectacular wall design by paper artist Karen Navalta. It’s an awesome 3D mural of rose-gold, copper and frosted plum roses. This striking feature leads us to a vast dining area of plush curved booths finished in rich emerald velour overlooking a tandoor oven and Robata grill for theatrical cooking. The tandoor gives a clue to the style of food – competitively priced Northern Indian fare and recipes that evolved out of the movement of peoples and cultures during the Partition.
The Chef Krishna Negi first made his name when he launched the acclaimed Tangawizi in Richmond Upon Thames in 2004 and then honed his culinary skills with Michelin-starred Vineet Bhatia.
The easy to navigate menu includes one of their signature specials the 1947 Maharajah Prawns marinated in a blend of spices and cooked in the tandoor. There are hearty dishes such as the popular and indulgent Dhaba Murgh – a rich and lightly spiced chicken curry which can be accompanied by an innovative Caramelised Onion and Cheese Naan. The truly inspirational Asparagus and Sugar Snaps with Fresh Coconut works well with either the Daal Tadka made from yellow split lentils or the perennial favourite Daal Makhani – slow cooked black lentils finished with butter and cream. And the sparkle continues with desserts made in-house by the pastry chefs. My personal favourites are the Kulfis in Pistachio and Rose and the Punjabi classic Phirni, a cardamom-flavoured rice pudding with a hint of coconut. The specially created cocktails such as the Chai Martini or the non-alcoholic Holy Temple compliment the diverse flavours of the cuisine which all adds to the opulence and glamour that’s affordable luxury.
